Incidence and Predictors of Hypertension Among Rural Chinese Adults: Results From Liaoning Province

ABSTRACT
<b>OBJECTIVE</b> We wanted to determine the incidence of hypertension and its risk factors among rural Chinese adults. <b>METHODS</b> A population-based sample 24,360 adults aged 35 years older free from at baseline was observed 2004–2006 2008. Incident defined as a systolic pressure 140 mm Hg or greater, diastolic 90 current use antihypertensive medication. <b>RESULTS</b> During mean follow-up period 28 months, 29.6% men 23.4% women developed hypertension. Among men, independent predictors incident were age (hazard ratio [HR] = 1.11; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.10–1.13), Mongolian ethnicity (HR 1.09; CI, 1.01–1.18), alcohol, 1.14; 1.06–1.23), high income vs low 1.00–1.22; HR 1.03–1.20), prehypertension normotension 1.18; 1.08–1.28), overweight obesity 1.28; 1.17–1.40), salt intake 1.00; 1.00–1.01) family history 1.03–1.27).
