ABSTRACT
Background:The CUPID (Cultural and Psychosocial Influences on Disability) study was established to explore the hypothesis that common musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) associated disability are importantly influenced by culturally determined health beliefs expectations.This paper describes methods of data collection various characteristics sample.Methods/Principal Findings: A standardised questionnaire covering symptoms, potential risk factors, used collect information from 47 samples nurses, office workers, other (mostly manual) workers in 18 countries six continents.In addition, local investigators provided economic aspects employment for each occupational group.Participation exceeded 80% 33 groups, after pre-specified exclusions, analysis based 12,426 subjects (92 1018 per group).As expected, there high usage computer keyboards while nurses had highest prevalence heavy manual lifting all but one country.There substantial heterogeneity between groups psychosocial work; three-to fivefold variation awareness someone outside work with pain; more than ten-fold adverse about back arm pain, terms such as ''repetitive strain injury'' (RSI).Conclusions/Significance: The large differences factors (including knowledge MSDs) should allow be addressed effectively.
