ABSTRACT
Background: Two bovine species contribute to the Indonesian livestock, zebu (Bos indicus) and banteng javanicus), respectively.Although male hybrid offspring of these is not fertile, cattle breeds are supposed be mixed origin. However, this has been documented so far only supported by preliminary molecular analysis. Methods Findings: Analysis mitochondrial, Y-chromosomal microsatellite DNA showed a introgression 10-16% in breeds.East-Javanese Madura Galekan have higher levels autosomal (20-30%) combine paternal lineage with predominant (Madura) or even complete (Galekan) maternal origin. Two bulls carried taurine haplotypes, presumably French Limousin origin. In contrast, we did find evidence for five populations Bali cattle, domestic form banteng. Conclusions: Because their unique composition represent valuable genetic resource, which potentially may also exploited other tropical regions.
