ABSTRACT
Interest in developing gene drive systems to control invasive species is growing, with New Zealand reportedly considering the nascent technology as a way locally eliminate mammalian pests that threaten its unique flora and fauna. If drives successfully eradicated these populations, many would rejoice, but what are possible consequences? Here, we explore risk of accidental spread posed by self-propagating technologies, highlight new designs might achieve better outcomes, explain why need open international discussions concerning could have global ramifications.
