ABSTRACT
There is increasing evidence that autoimmune disease associated with development of chronic obstructive pulmonary (COPD). We aim to assess the relationship between systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) and COPD risk in a nationwide population. We conducted retrospective cohort study using catastrophic illness registry Taiwan National Health Insurance Research Database (NHIRD). identified 10,623 patients SLE newly diagnosed 2000 2010. Each patient was randomly frequency-matched four people without on age, sex, index year from general population. Both cohorts were followed up until end 2010 measure incidence COPD. The analyzed Cox proportional hazards regression models including comorbidities. The overall rate 1.73-fold higher than control (17.4 vs. 10.1 per 10,000 person-years, 95% CI = 1.62-1.84). Age related analysis showed increased age both cohorts. However, adjusted HR maximum observed youngest group (adjusted HR: 4.33, CI, 2.39-7.85) while minimum witnessed oldest 1.19, 0.85-1.22).Patients have significant developing Based findings this study, it can be hypothesized addition cigarette smoke may determining factor for incidence. further investigation needed corroborate hypothesis.
