ABSTRACT
We present the first global assessment of extinction risk for a major group freshwater invertebrates, caridean shrimps. The all 763 species was assessed using IUCN Red List criteria that include geographic ranges, habitats, ecology and past threats. Indo-Malayan region holds over half diversity, with peak in Indo-China southern China. Shrimps primarily inhabit flowing water; however, significant subterranean component is present, which more threatened than surface fauna. Two are extinct further 10 possibly extinct, almost one third either or Near Threatened (NT). Threats to shrimps agricultural urban pollution impact two-thirds NT species. Invasive climate change have greatest overall threats (based on combined timing, scope severity threats).
