ABSTRACT
Purpose To investigate the association between concomitant esotropia or exotropia and refractive error in preschool children Methods A population-based sample of 5831 aged 3 to 6 years was selected from all kindergartens a representative county (Yuhuatai District, Nanjing, Jiangsu Province) China. Clinical examinations including ocular alignment, motility, visual acuity, optometry, stereopsis screening, slit lamp examination fundus were performed by trained ophthalmologists optometrists. Odd ratios (OR) 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) calculated evaluate with exotropia. Results In multivariate logistic regression analysis, associated independently spherical equivalent anisometropia (OR, 3.15 for 0.50 <1.00 diopter (D) anisometropia, 7.41 > = 1.00 D anisometropia) hyperopia. There severity-dependent hyperopia development esotropia, ORs increasing 9.3 2.00 <3.00 hyperopia, 180.82 5.00 Concomitant astigmatism 3.56 astigmatism, 1.9 <0.00 astigmatism), myopia 40.54 -1.00 myopia, 18.93 <-1.00 myopia), 67.78 <2.00 23.13 25.57 3.00 <4.00 8.36 4.00 <5.00 hyperopia). Conclusions This study highlights close associations prevalence exotropia, which should be considered when managing childhood error.
