ABSTRACT
Cutaneous leishmaniasis (CL) in Sri Lanka is caused by Leishmania donovani. This study assessed the diagnostic value of a new rapid immunochromatographic strip (CL-Detect™ IC-RDT), that captures peroxidoxin antigen amastigotes. We sampled 74 clinically suspected CL lesions, which 59 (79.7%) were positive PCR, 43 (58.1%) Giemsa stained slit skin smear (SSS) and 21 (28.4%) IC-RDT. All samples either SSS or IC-RDT both PCR. The sensitivities compared to PCR 36% 73%, respectively. Fifteen patients from this endemic region negative all three tests. Twenty two non-CL lesions non-endemic also methods. Specificity PPV 100%; NPVs 37% 58%, median parasite grading was 2+ (1-10 parasites/100 HPFs) 3+ parasites /10HPFs). duration lesion not associated with positivity. The grade Lankan low. low Detect™ may be due counts expression amastigotes L. donovani strain. Our results indicate has combined for confirmation Lanka. current commercially available suitable diagnose Lanka; an improved sensitivity detect would valuable addition tool kit
