Intellectual contributions meriting authorship: Survey results from the top cited authors across all science categories

Authorship is the currency of an academic career for which number papers researchers publish demonstrates creativity, productivity, and impact. To discourage coercive authorship practices inflated publication records, journals require authors to affirm detail their intellectual contributions but this strategy has been unsuccessful as lists continue grow. Here, we surveyed close 6000 top cited in all science categories with a list 25 research activities that adapted from National Institutes Health (NIH) guidelines. Responses varied widely individuals same discipline, level experience, geographic region. Most agreed NIH criteria grant who draft manuscript, analyze interpret data, propose ideas. However, thousands also value supervision contributing comments whereas recommends discounting these when attributing authorship. People minutiae beyond writing data reduction: humanities it less than those pure applied sciences; Far East Asia Middle Northern Africa more anglophones northern Europeans.
