ABSTRACT
Background There is limited literature about the clinicopathological characteristics and outcomes of rare histologic variants gallbladder cancer (GBC). Methods Using SEER database, surgically managed GBC patients with microscopically confirmed adenocarcinoma, adenosquamous/squamous cell carcinoma papillary were identified from 1988 to 2009. Patients second primary distant metastasis at presentation excluded. The effect variables on overall survival (OS) disease specific (DSS) analyzed using univariate multivariate proportional hazards modeling. All associations considered statistically significant an alpha error 0.01. Results Out 4738 cases, 217 (4.6%), 367 (7.7%), 4154 adenocarcinomas (87.7%) identified. Median age was 72 years. Higher tumor grade (grade 2, 3, 4 versus 1), higher T stage (T2, T3, T4 T1), lymph node positivity (N1 N0) histology (versus adenocarcinoma) had worse OS DSS (p < .001). Papillary better than adenocarcinoma (HR = 0.7; p Radical surgery simple cholecystectomy) 0.83, 0.002) in analysis. rates 3 5 years 0.56 0.44 for papillary, 0.3 0.22 0.14 0.12 histology, while 0.67 0.61 0.38 0.31 0.17 0.16 subtypes respectively. Conclusion compared adenocarcinoma.
