ABSTRACT
Background Smoking is the main risk factor for most of leading causes death. Cessation single important step that smokers can take to improve their health. With aim informing policy makers about decisions on future tobacco control strategies, we estimated time and age trends in smoking cessation Europe between 1980 2010. Methods Data history 50,228 lifetime from 17 European countries were obtained six large population-based studies included Ageing Lungs Cohorts (ALEC) consortium. rates assessed retrospectively, three decades (1980–1989, 1990–1999, 2000–2010). The analyses stratified by sex region (North, East, South, West Europe). Results Overall, 21,735 subjects (43.3%) quit over a total time-at-risk 803,031 years. increased 2010 young adults (16–40 years), especially females, all regions, older (41–60 years) North Europe, while they stable South Europe. In 2000s, men women combined highest (49.9 per 1,000/year) compared other regions (range: 26.5–32.7 1,000/year). A sharp peak was observed around 30, possibly as consequence pregnancy-related cessation. who started before 16 less likely than those later. Conclusions Our findings suggest an increasing awareness detrimental effects across However, are lagging behind suggesting need intensify strategies these regions. Additional efforts should be made keep adolescents away taking up smoking, early initiation could make quitting more challenging during later life.
