ABSTRACT
Video and image data are regularly used in the field of benthic ecology to document biodiversity. However, their use is subject a number challenges, principally identification taxa within images without associated physical specimens. The challenge applying traditional taxonomic keys fauna from has led development personal, group, or institution level reference catalogues operational units (OTUs) morphospecies. Lack standardisation among these problems with observer bias inability combine datasets across studies. In addition, lack common standard stifling efforts application artificial intelligence taxon identification. Using North Atlantic deep sea as case study, we propose database structure facilitate morphospecies between research groups support future multiple front-end applications. We also framework for coordination international develop guides marine species images. proposed maps Darwin Core allow integration existing databases. suggest management where high-level curated by regional team, consisting both end users experts. identify mechanism which overall quality guide could be raised over next decade. Finally, discuss role advancing supporting sustainable this ecosystem.
