ABSTRACT
Purpose To evaluate the presence and concentration of citicoline its metabolites (choline, cytidine uridine) in vitreous body human eyes after topical application an ophthalmic solution 2%, vivo. Methods Twenty-one subjects affected by epiretinal membrane with surgical indication for pars-plana vitrectomy underwent treatment 1 drop 3 times/day a 0.2% high molecular weight hyaluronic acid 0.01% benzalkonium chloride (OMK1, Omikron Italia s.r.l., Rome, Italy) 14 days before surgery 2 hours prior to surgery. Five additional patients served as controls received OMK1 vehicle without citicoline. The samples were taken at beginning analyzed qualitative/quantitative determination means performance liquid chromatography. Results overall mean treated 2% was 406.72 ± 52.99 μg/mL, while choline, uridine 180.88 41.49 44.45 10.19 μg/mL 330.41 75.8 respectively. phakic (n = 13, 366.61 129.61 μg/mL) lower compared that found pseudophakic 8, 435.89 131.42 difference not statistically significant. control 45.66 26.36 17.21 9.93 6.24 3.6 172.80 99.76 Conclusion Citicoline can reach when administered solution. This evidence contributes build-up pyramid evidences required determining role formulation retinal optic nerve neurodegenerative diseases.
