Menstrual hygiene practices among high school girls in urban areas in Northeastern Ethiopia: A neglected issue in water, sanitation, and hygiene research

ABSTRACT
Poor menstrual hygiene practices influence school girls' dignity, well-being and health, school-absenteeism, academic performance, dropout in developing countries. Despite this, hygienic are not well understood have received proper attention by WASH programs. Therefore, this study examined the extent of good associated factors among high girls Dessie City, Amhara Region, northeastern Ethiopia.A school-based cross-sectional was employed to examine 546 randomly selected students Ethiopia. Pretested interviewer-administered questionnaires a observational checklist were used for data collection. EpiData Version 4.6 Statistical Package Social Sciences 25.0 entry analysis, respectively. In P-value 0.05 declared be significantly practices.Of respondents, 53.9% (95% CI [49.6, 58.2]) reported The following found practices: age range 16-19 years (AOR = 1.93, 95% CI: [1.22-3.06]); grade level 10 1.90, [1.18-3.07]); maternal education (primary) 3.72, [1.81-7.63]), (secondary) 8.54, [4.18-17.44]), (college) 6.78, [3.28-14.02]) respectively]; having regular menses [AOR 1.85, (1.03-3.32); knowledge regarding menstruation 2.02, [1.32-3.09]); discussing friends 1.79, [1.12-2.86]), obtaining money pads from family 2.08, [1.15-3.78]).We that more half had Factors include 16-18 years, 10, being completed primary, secondary college level, menses, menstruation, family. educating student mothers about MHP should priority intervention area eliminate problem daughters. Furthermore, order improve girls, further is needed improving encouraging families support their daughters buying sanitary promoting discussions hygiene. Schools need focus on making environment conducive managing increasing awareness safe providing adequate water/sanitation facilities.
