The alveolar epithelium is protected by a heparan sulfate-rich, glycosaminoglycan layer called the epithelial glycocalyx. It cleaved in patients with acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and murine models of influenza A (IAV) infection, shedding fragments into airspace from cell surface.
