Effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on emotional and behavioral problems and sleep problems in adolescents

ABSTRACT
Background The asynchrony rapid phase of cognitive, physical and emotional development occurring in adolescence may result various issues such as risk-taking behavior, psychosocial problems. School closure during the COVID-19 pandemic has caused a tremendous change adolescent lifestyle habits, including sleep patterns. causing added challenges to adolescents’ behavioral problems.
 Objective To identify association between disorders with problems urban rural adolescents.
 Methods We conducted cross-sectional study among adolescents aged 12-18 years from November December 2021 two provinces, DKI Jakarta Riau Islands. recruited students consecutively randomly selected junior senior high schools. used Strengths Difficulties Questionnaire (SDQ) Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) screen for disorders, respectively. questionnaires were sent electronically each subject after obtaining parental consent.
 Results There 400 subjects included our study, which 64% female. prevalences amongst areas 12.5% 5.5%, Emotional well more common than (13 vs. 11.5% 50.5% 38%; P=0.012, respectively). associated SDQ subscales symptoms [PR 4.88 (95%CI 2.97 8.03); P<0.01), conduct 3.71 1.53 9.04); P=0.02), hyperactivity/inattention 6.05 2.58 16.17); P<0.01], peer relationship 3.28 1.33 8.09); P<0.01).
