ABSTRACT
Background and Objective: Older adults are at risk for both impaired oral health suboptimal nutritional status. The objective of this study was to explore the relationships between malnutrition missing teeth in community-dwelling older adults. Design: This a retrospective cross-sectional analysis data obtained from electronic records 107 patients aged 65 who attended an urban northeast US dental school clinic June 1, 2015 July 15, 2016. Odontograms radiographs were used identify numbers locations; calculated using Self-Mini Nutritional Assessment (Self-MNA). Relationships assessed bivariate logistic regression. Results: Participants (N=107) 72.6 years (SD=5.6) age; 50.5% female. Mean Self-MNA score 12.3 (SD=2.0) reflective normal nutrition status; 20.6% malnutrition, 4.7% malnourished. Greater than 87% partially or completely edentulous. Those with 10-19 had lower scores (mean=11.6, SD=2.5) those 0-9 (mean=12.7, SD=1.3) 20 more (mean=12.6, SD=1.8) increased (OR=2.5, p=0.076). Conclusion: majority sample edentulous likely be malnutrition. Further studies needed examine tooth loss impact dentition on eating experience larger inform clinical practice.
