ABSTRACT
The increase of human activities across different regions of Brazil has impacted biodiversity loss and water availability, negatively affecting natural resources, as well as social and economic factors, especially in the Amazon-Cerrado transition region. The aim of this work was to analyze changes in land use and land cover from 1986 to 2022, as well as to project a scenario for the year 2034 in the Amazon-Cerrado transition region, Maranhão, Brazil. The study was conducted in the municipality of Chapadinha, in the Eastern Maranhão Mesoregion. The Annual Land Use and Land Cover Mapping Project in Brazil (MAPBIOMAS) was used for the temporal and spatial analysis of Land Use, Land-Use Change, and Forestry (LULUCF). The generation of the future forecast model for LULUCF was obtained by applying linear regression to the main land use classes in the municipality of Chapadinha..The results show that from 1986 to 2022, there was an expansion of Pasture (255.2%), Urban Infrastructure (120.5%), and Soy (116.2%), along with significant reductions in the classes of Savanna Formation (24.67%), and Water Bodies (69.32%). In this study, Urban Infrastructure and Pasture were the land use classes that most affected Water Bodies.
