ABSTRACT
Carabid abundance, species richness and diversity were compared along an urban-rural gradient in Helsinki, Finland.Increased urbanization was found to result significant reductions richness, though the abundance not statistically significant.Forest habitat-specialist scarce rural sites virtually absent from urban suburban sites. There no evidence of higher at intermediate disturbance levels (suburban sites), as predicted by hypothesis.Species with flight ability utilize open habitat more predominant sites.Flightless sites.Carabid data suffi cient reveal negative impact urbanization, so similar studies could be conducted regions where carabid taxonomy is poorly known.Species composition patterns do, however, provide invaluable information. To conclude, if biodiversity main tained areas, priority must given provision those features which are essential for sensitive species, such decaying wood wet microhabitats. These incorporated into green networks particular, other than common generalists benefit them.
