ABSTRACT
In Europe, Sheet Molding Compound (SMC) has high market relevance in the field of glass fiber reinforced polymer composites with a share almost 20% terms mass. The material thermal expansion coefficient similar to steel and special grades show Class-A surface quality being thereby an appreciated material in automotive industry. mechanical properties SMC components thus its implementation new application fields are mainly limited by type length. project “Preform-SMC” analyzed the combination standard process (chopped long fibers) preform technology (textiles) order to improve overall performance components. studies revealed that impregnation of the is determined density filler content semi-finished product layer structure reinforcing fibers. Locally implemented textiles improve, by implementing endless fibers among load paths, properties. Depending on the layer e.g. impact strength absorbed energy could at least be doubled.
