ABSTRACT
Abstract
The Hessian metallurgical company Isabellenhütte Gmbh in Dillenburg was a science-based company that applied for and was granted a number of patents from the late 19th century onwards. Among these was a patent for «iron-containing manganese copper alloys» issued in 1917. The article examines the strategies that the company used to observe and challenge competing patents of other companies, such as Metallgesellschaft AG, Frankfurt a.M. As a small, family-run company, Isabellenhütte was most likely to be successful in its efforts to bring down such competing patents if, on the one hand, there was a factual basis for the correctness of its assessment and, on the other hand, it had the support of a patent attorney.
