Curricular Aspects of the Fogarty Bioethics International Training Programs

ABSTRACT
The curriculum design, faculty characteristics, and experience of implementing masters' level international research ethics training programs supported by the Fogarty International Center was investigated. Multiple pedagogical approaches were employed to adapt learning needs trainees. While no generally agreed set core competencies exists for advanced training, more than 75% curricula examined included issues in ethics, responsible conduct research, human rights, philosophical foundations regulation ethical review process. Common skills taught critical thinking, methodology statistics, writing, presentation proficiency. Curricula also addressed cultural, social, religious context trainees related ethics. Programs surveyed noted trainee interest Western concepts value transnational exchange ideas. Similar expertise profiles existed all programs. Approximately 40% female. Collaboration between from low- ***middle-income countries (LMICs) high-income (HICs) occurred most at least 50% HIC had previous LMIC experience.
