The Role of Inhalation Delivery Devices in COPD: Perspectives of Patients and Health Care Providers

ABSTRACT
Background: Inhaled medications form the foundation of pharmacologic treatment for chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).The Delivery Makes a Difference (DMaD) project was conducted to better understand health care provider (HCP) and patient perspectives about role inhalation delivery devices in COPD, examine nature educational efforts between HCPs patients on proper device technique. Methods: Data were derived from 2 original quantitative, web-based, descriptive, cross-sectional surveys distributed who manage COPD (n=513) with (n=499) United States. Descriptive statistics used assess data across important demographic variables. Inferential differences attitudinal, behavioral measures that cross-tabulated data. Results: When prescribing medication newly diagnosed stable or unstable only 37% considered type be highly important, 45% assessing technique every patient. Patients also relatively unconcerned (64% never concerned), regardless their severity. Although did not identify education as significant impediment use, they reported inconsistent experiences. Conclusions: We found prioritize over when selecting treatments, showing limited concerns use. These results highlight need coordinate professional patient-directed further promote selection use management.
