Adolescent Use of Flavored Non-Tobacco Oral Nicotine Products

ABSTRACT
BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES Flavored non-tobacco oral nicotine products (eg, pouches and nontherapeutic gum, lozenges, tablets, gummies), are increasingly marketed in the United States. Prevalence of product use among adolescents is unknown. METHODS We calculated prevalence ever past 6-month pouches, other (ie, and/or e-cigarettes, cigarettes, hookah or waterpipe, cigars, cigarillos, snus high school students Southern California between September December 2021. Generalized linear mixed models tested associations sociodemographic factors tobacco-product with any product. RESULTS Among sample (n = 3516), was highest for e-cigarettes (ever: 9.6%, 6-month: 5.5%), followed by 3.4%, 1.7%), <1% products. Ever users combustible tobacco (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 77.6; 95% confidence interval [CI] 39.7–152) noncombustible (aOR 40.4; CI= 24.3–67.0) had higher using products, compared to never tobacco. Use greater Hispanic (versus all races/ethnicities except Asian, aOR 2.58; CI 1.36–4.87), sexual minority heterosexual, aOR=1.63; 1.03–2.57), gender male, 2.83; 1.29–6.19), female aOR=1.92, 1.20–3.06) participants. CONCLUSIONS Non-tobacco were second most prevalent used adolescents. They disproportionately certain racial ethnic, sexual, groups, those a history use. Adolescent surveillance should be public health priority.
