Peritoneal dialysis related infections in a tertiary care hospital in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia

ABSTRACT
To detect the incidence of and risk factors for infections among patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD) undergoing peritoneal dialysis (PD).A retrospective cohort study was conducted at PD unit King Fahad Medical City. End-stage above age 12 years who were management between January 2006 March 2016 included.One hundred enrolled in examined over a total observation period 2,553 patient-months. The leading ESRD etiology hypertension (26.3%). mean duration 28.05 months. A 45 developed 101 episodes technique-related (TRIs). Peritonitis represented majority these (90 episodes), an overall rate one episode per 28.3 TRIs mostly caused by coagulase-negative staphylococci. non-technique related (NTRIs). There statistically significant difference TRI non-infected regarding presence diabetes dialysis. No peritonitis-related deaths noted. In total, 21 continued on 18 shifted to hemodialysis (HD). Conclusion: our setting, are more susceptible than NTRIs. Diabetes increases developing TRIs. high staphylococcal suggests touch contamination.
