ABSTRACT
Abstract Amorphous alumina coatings, intended as hydrogen barriers, were successfully deposited on Fe-8 wt% Cr substrates by plasma ion-assisted deposition technique. The amorphous structure of the coatings was confirmed transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffraction. interfacial mechanical properties coating-substrate system evaluated using an in-house custom-designed backside electrochemical charging method. In this approach, substrate side faces electrolyte (hydrogen entry side) behavior tested coating exit side). A Kelvin-probe-based measurement performed to determine diffusivity in these at room temperature a similar approach. Chemical microstructural characterizations, combination with scratch hardness testing, show that accumulation is strongly responsible for drastic changes morphology its adhesion substrate. Scratch testing promises be quick easy technique fingerprint coating/substrate interface upon exposure. Graphical abstract
