Visualising Theatre Historiography: Judith Thompson's White Biting Dog (1984 and 2011) in the Simulated Environment for Theatre (SET)

This essay considers the opportunities afforded by Simulated Environment for Theatre (SET) exploring functions of and relationships between historical theatrical texts other records performance. Over course SET’s development, system’s digital environment visualizing text performance has increasingly emphasised affordances that are not available in or material environments. Our most recent focus been on potential applications theatre historians, particular because user-controlled, hybrid two- three-dimensional interface, which permits simultaneous visualization a variety research materials simulations. Through project theatre-historical significance Soulpepper Theatre’s 2011 production Judith Thompson’s White Biting Dog relation to Tarragon 1984 premiere play, we have identified some current strengths SET as tool research, well technical improvements would enhance its efficacy, design challenges warranting further consideration. With refinements, add offered existing tools through ability visualise methodologies positioning user agent making it an historiographical scholarship.
