"Not worth doing prenatal care": an ethnographic study of a low-income community

ABSTRACT
The aim of this study was to explore the reasons why pregnant women do not seek prenatal care (PNC).The ethnographic method used in a low-income Brazilian community. Ethnographic interviews were performed with 11 postpartum who did PNC their last pregnancy.The cultural sub-themes express for seeking included: "I found out I too late and have enough time receive PNC," because had hide pregnancy avoid problems," address urgent issues could "The services are good going doctor when ill is only rich people," theme: "PNC worth pursuing: it unnecessary there many obstacles receiving it."The main strategies that should be considered increase adherence better access integrality through use adequate management criteria.
