ABSTRACT
Improving seismic hazard mitigation of the densely populated metropol- itan area and around capital Taiwan requires detailed knowledge 3D crustal structure Taipei basin. The high levels ambient noise low regional seismicity this region complicate investigations with traditional exploration or earthquake tomography methods. We investigate shallow crust in metropolitan using surface wave array time domain empirical Green's function (TDEGF) inferred from correlation noise. Analysis TDEGF amplitudes suggests that dominant sources are coastlines continental shelf Strait, northwest study region. Our demonstrates is feasible at periods 0.5-3 s, which much shorter than 10-30 s used most other studies, opens new opportunities for resolution studies near-surface heterogeneity. lateral variation Rayleigh phase velocity correlates well geology faults play an important role tectonic setting. High velocities mark Tatun volcanic area, Kuanyin Mountain dominated by Quaternary igneous rock, Miocene Western Foothills south fault. Low characterize regions along western southeastern edges basin Pleis- tocene Linkou tableland. Main either marked define transitions between high- low-velocity anomalies.
