Effect of Squill Oxymel on Knee Osteoarthritis: A Triple-Blind, Randomized, Controlled Clinical Trial

ABSTRACT
Osteoarthritis (OA) of the knee is a major health problem in society. Iranian Traditional Medicine (ITM) or Persian (PM) as branch complementary medicine has been practiced Iran for many centuries. An herbal medication known squill oxymel used by PM physicians OA. Our aim to investigate effect on OA joint. Eighty eight patients were assigned receive placebo syrup (10 ml each morning empty stomach) 8 consecutive weeks. Acetaminophen tablets considered rescue medicine. Ultimately, 43 group and 40 treatment completed trial included statistical analysis. Patients followed 4 weeks after cessation treatment. The Knee injury Outcome Score (KOOS) questionnaire Visual Analog Scale (VAS) main outcome measures. Laboratory tests including AST, ALT, BUN, Cr plus inflammatory WBC, ESR, CRP with specific i.e. interleukin 6 (IL6) superoxide dismutase (SOD) at beginning end intervention measured. results showed positive pain (p=0.04) daily activity (p=0.01) KOOS Cessation On other hand, VAS decreased both groups; while it significance intra-group no between two groups. After treatment, continued some subscales KOOS, symptoms, activities, but stopped group. In general, clinically statistically significant improvement was observed Squill promising management future researches larger sample size longer duration are necessary.
