ABSTRACT
Background: Pigeon pea is an important dietary protein source for humans but the production was constrained by various biotic and abiotic factors. Breeding strategies were followed to improve yield developing high yielding varieties at same time utilization of genetic resources have declined. native India with huge natural variability in local germplasm its wild relatives. So it necessary identify select breeding material from considerable morphological utilize programmes. As initial study, 200 pre-breeding lines developed evaluated patterns. Methods: A total two hundred selected F4 generation pigeon ICAR-NBPGR Randomized Block design (RBD) during 2014-2015 kharif season under Indo-Swiss collaboration Biotechnology Agricultural College Research Institute, Madurai (TNAU). The accessions found be superior seed than check APK1were forwarded next (2015-2016) assessment variability, heritability, advance association studies.Result: Qualitative traits variation leaflet shape, stem colour, pattern streaks base colour observed. All tested expressed greater most traits. Maximum coefficient observed number pods per plant primary branches plant. Selection moderate heritability coupled like plant, could help crop improvement program. Seed positively correlated seeds pod, weight. Potential stocks donors based on weight pod. assessment. identified trait-specific will future
