ABSTRACT
The role of smoking as a risk factor for periodontitis was assessed separately in diabetic and nondiabetic study groups. Subject listings stratified age (19 to 40 years) sex were obtained subjects with insulin-dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM) subjects. For both the IDDM group (n = 132) 95), samples constructed by random selection from each subject listing. Patients recruited phone, examined, their medical dental histories obtained. Among subjects, prevalence markedly higher among current smokers compared never (P < or 0.005) 19 30 year-old (46% vs. 12%) 31 groups (88% 33%). mean percent sites gingival pocket depth > 4 mm than 0.001) (8.2% 3.4%) (14.3% 4.3%) effects similar that observed population.
