Implementing Nature Based Solutions in Rural Landscapes; Barriers Experienced in the PHUSICOS Project

ABSTRACT
Nature Based Solutions (NBS) are becoming increasingly important in both the EU and individual countries' political agendas, as a sustainable means to reduce risk posed by hydrometeorological hazards. However, use of NBS is increasing, number barriers regarding their practical implementation also becomes apparent. A review studies have summarized classified barriers, mainly urban settings. PHUSICOS H2020 Innovation Action demonstrate rural mountain landscapes. Large scale demonstrator case sites with several sub-projects established Italy, Norway French Spanish Pyrenees. The present paper describes project's measures, experienced some which resulted full cancellation planned interventions. Many settings same root causes ones described from areas, main barrier-creating mechanisms institutional factors, resistance among stakeholders technical economic issues. key element, however, lack knowledge about ability deliver series co-benefits addition risk-reducing effects, that long-term thinking required see effect many these co-benefits.
