Indigo naturalis (IN) is a traditional Chinese medicine concocted from medicinal plants such as Baphicacanthus cusia (Nees) Bremek. IN has multifaceted pharmacological activities. Recent research highlights the remarkable efficacy of in treating ulcerative colitis (UC). We developed new processing technology without use lime. Correspondingly, content active ingredients relatively increased Naturalis prepared using novel method (NIN). In this study, protective effects NIN on UC was verified dextran sulfate sodium salt (DSS) induced mouse models. could significantly improve weight loss, diarrhoea and prolapse, bloody stools, elevated Disease activity index (DAI) alleviate symptoms mice; it also shortening colon, disappearance intestinal crypts, epithelial cell destruction inflammatory infiltration caused by UC; reduce Histological (HI); Besides, relieved response decreasing pro-inflammatory cytokines TNF-α IL-1β, elevating anti-inflammatory IL-10 IL-22; restores mucosal barrier increasing level MUC2 protein expression at site colonic injury. The significant were for first time, suggesting that worth further developing into therapeutic drug. And necessarily, safety evaluation comparison with will help application NIN.
