Establishment of reference interval for thyroid-stimulating hormone using electrochemiluminescence assay in a healthy adult population from Fortaleza, Brazil

ABSTRACT
Objective This study aimed to determine the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH) reference interval (RI) and assess influence of use thyroid ultrasonography (TUS) on individual selection from a healthy adult population in Fortaleza, Brazil. Subjects methods cross-sectional recruited patients (N = 272; age 18-50 years) with normal function (NTF) placed them three groups according their test results: NTF (n all participants), TUS 170; participants who underwent US), RI 124; individuals TSH levels). TSH, FT4, TT3, TgAb, TPOAb concentrations were determined by electrochemiluminescence assay. was performed using 7-12 MHz multifrequency linear transducer two radiologists. The 2.5th 97.5th percentiles distribution curve corresponded lower upper levels, respectively. Results mean level 1.74 ± 0.96 mIU/L, range 0.56-4.45 mIU/L. There no difference between men women nor groups. did not appear be an essential tool for group selection. Conclusion limit comparable provided assay manufacturer (4.45 vs. 4.20 mIU/L) but (0.56 0.27 mIU/L). finding may have clinical impact since these values lead misdiagnosis euthyroid subclinical hyperthyroidism.
