ABSTRACT
Using a community-based participatory research approach, tribe-university team conducted formative assessment of local factors that influence youth wellness to guide the design culturally and locally relevant health promotion program.Open-ended interviews with key informants, school self-assessment using Centers for Disease Control's School Health Index, generated environmental inventory provided data were triangulated yield composite influential perceived need within community.Family involvement personal goal setting identified as wellness. Supportive programs described having consistent adult leadership, structured activities, positive regional image. Availability illicit drugs alcohol, poor teacher attitude, lack significant negative impact behavior.Local/native (emic) university/nonnative (etic) perspectives abilities can be combined is useful public planning. In this collaborative effort, standard means collection analysis modified in some cases enhance build upon knowledge skills community researchers.
