ABSTRACT
Although prior studies have identified several risk factors for gun carrying, no longitudinal examined a comprehensive set of explanatory together in within-individual change models or whether the predictors carrying across adolescence and early young adulthood. The present study fills these gaps by examining predictive utility any associations vary age. sample included 1216 men who were arrested first time during (approximately 15 years old) interviewed regularly 5 (until approximately 20 after arrest. outcome was youth-self-reported variables consistent with various explanations (psychosocial maturity deficits; antisocial behavioral style; socialization; victimization). Research questions addressed fixed effects dynamic panel (within-individual models). Results showed that most robust increased exposure to guns gun-related violence engagement other illegal behavior. results emphasize specific etiology potential social contagion effect events. Overall, points need prevention intervention programs specifically target reduction real perceived prevalence events men’s lives.
