Characterization of goat and sheep production in the state of Sergipe, Northeast of Brazil

ABSTRACT
Characterization of the profile goat and sheep production in Sergipe enables better understanding main barriers linked to low productivity, generating important information for development this sector. The objective was identify characterize goats Sergipe. From 2011 2014, 41 properties 60 were analyzed, located 25 municipalities three mesoregions State (Leste, Agreste, Sertão). obtained through application a structured questionnaire farmers addressing topics such as: characterization property, herd, facilities, sanitary, nutritional, reproductive management, socioeconomic aspects farmer. results demonstrated that 58.5% (24/41) farms had an area less than 30 hectares (ha), reared predominantly mixed breed animals (SRD), with use technologies, aiming at family consumption, complementing income local marketing. On properties, 58.3% (35/60) over 100 ha used Santa Inês crossbreeds together cattle. Significant flaws also observed feed, emphasizing non-use preserved foods forages typical region, factors contribute level productivity sustainability viable homogeneous manner. findings led conclusion more organized is necessary, mainly investment technologies qualified continuous rural extension, improving production, income, quality life breeders.
