ABSTRACT
Falls are a common public health problem in older adults regarding increased morbidity, mortality, and healthcare costs. Determining the factors associated with falls is of utmost importance for detecting at risk people. We present here field study conducted to examine prevalence among community-dwelling adults. In this population-based cross-sectional study, we included aged > 60 years living Fatih District Istanbul Province between November 2014-May 2015, through simple random sampling method. noted age, sex, falls, fear falling, number diseases medications, presence diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, urinary fecal incontinence, chronic pain. Frailty was assessed FRAIL questionnaire. Functional capacity evaluated by Katz's 6-item ADL Lawton Brody's 8-item IADL scales. The European quality-5 dimension (EQ-5D) questionnaire used quality life assessment. cognitive status screening Mini-cog test. Depressive mood Geriatric Depression scale short form (GDS-SF). Malnutrition mini-nutritional assessment form. Handgrip strength (HGS) measured hand dynamometer. Body composition bioimpedance analysis. 4-meter usual gait speed recorded. Working Group on Sarcopenia Older People2 (EWSGOP2) criteria sarcopenia definition. Romberg postural instability tests were balance gait. Continuous variables expressed as mean ± standard deviation or median interquartile range descriptive statistics, while categorical percentages. differences groups determined an independent sample t-test Mann-Whitney U test when required, Chi-square Fisher's exact applied variables. A multivariate logistic regression analysis determine identified significant univariate analyses. The 28.5% [mean age: 75.4 7.3 (range: 61-101 years), 53.6% female], association pain, frailty, ADL, IADL, EQ-5D scores, dementia, GDS-SF score level ambulation analyses (p = 0.001, 0.030, 0.010, 0.004, 0.040, 0.007, 0.003, 0.030 respectively). In analysis, positive dementia (OR 3.66, 95% CI 1.40-9.53; p 0.010) frailty screenings =1.47, 1.05-2.06; 0.020) associates falls.Falls independently screening. These results will help develop specific tailored precautions at-risk prevent negative outcomes falls.
