ABSTRACT
As most chemotherapy is administered in the outpatient setting, patients are required to manage related side effects at home without direct support from health professionals. The Advanced Symptom Management System (ASyMS) has been developed facilitate remote monitoring and management of chemotherapy-related toxicity with cancer, using patient-reported outcomes questionnaires a clinician alerting system.This study aims evaluate usability ASyMS, mobile phone-based technology, perspective Canadian cancer receiving identify existing design, functionality, issues elicit their views, experiences, satisfaction ASyMS.We used mixed-method approach data collection user-based testing, think-aloud technique, semistructured interviews, short answer purposive sample 10 cancer. Participants attended testing sessions Centre for Global eHealth Innovation, University Health Network, performed specific tasks on ASyMS device. test was videorecorded each task timed during test. After sessions, participants completed posttest questionnaire participated qualitative interview. A thematic analysis code categorize identified into themes that summarized type frequency occurrence.The generated 3 overarching as follows: user-friendliness; usefulness (content quality richness); intention use. Results indicated 80% (8/10) had great motivation use 70% (7/10) positive perceptions successful all (10/10, 100%) attitude toward future. Most design functionality were navigation device desire more attractive advanced features. main general recommendations enhance readability screen; implement advance options (eg, search option); better navigation.The shown interviews. An evaluation symptom clinical trial needed.
