M.T. Fujii, S.M.P.B. Guimaràes, C.F.D. Gurgel and S. Fredericq. 2006. Characterization phylogenetic affinities of the red alga Chondrophycus flagelliferus (Rhodomelaceae, Ceramiales) from Brazil on basis morphological molecular evidence.Phycologia 45: 432–441. DOI: 10.2216/04-33.1A detailed study vegetative reproductive morphology is provided. The species possesses axial segments, each bearing two periaxial cells, a situation characteristic for genus Chondrophycus. Within Chondrophycus, C. belongs to subgenus Palisadi, section presence palisade-like outer cortical cell layer as seen in transverse sections branchlets; absence secondary pit connections between cells; fertile with pre-sporangial cover tetrasporangium initial post-sporangial that will develop into corticating system; right-angled tetrasporangial arrangement. position this within Laurencia sensu lato inferred parsimony Bayesian analyses chloroplast-encodedrbcL sequences 39 Rhodomelaceae using Ceramiaceae out-group. This corroborates taxonomic decision split genera Laurencia, Osmundea, indicates thatrbcL provides sufficient signal infer species-level relationships complex. Synapomorphic characters uniting include same origin spermatangial filaments tetrasporangia. principal character separating both number cells per segment. We hypothesize ancestor complex most likely possessed data indicate closely related papillosus complex, that, originally described, translucidus Laurencia.
