Obstetricians’ Prescribing Practices for Pain Management After Delivery

ABSTRACT
Aim: To examine postpartum opioid prescribing practices. Materials & methods: Obstetricians were interviewed about opioids: choice of opioid, clinical factors considered when prescribing, thoughts/beliefs and typical counseling provided. Inductive thematic analyses used to identify themes. Results: A total 38 interviews analyzed. Several key points emerged. The dosing number pills prescribed varied widely. mode delivery is the primary consideration for opioids. All providers would prescribe opioids breastfeeding women. Some offered on nonopioid treatment pain. Discussion: At two large tertiary centers in Pennsylvania, physicians wrote unique prescriptions. Patient addressed short-term pain management, but not chronic overuse
