ABSTRACT
The epiphytic lichen vegetation of trees in the Copenhagen area was mapped, and pH, total sulphur content buffer capacity its substratum were measured. S02 air pollution during two consecutive winters mapped. isopleths coincide well with inner distribution limits lichens, indicating specific critical levels for different species. level Buellia punctata (Hoffm.) Massal. 90-110 Iog m-3 Xanthoria parietina (L.) Th. Fr. 80-90 jg m-3, Lecanora subfusca coll. 70-80 ,ug Physcia pulverulenta (Schreb.) Hampe 40 m-3. These species considered useful as indicators biological evaluation investigation area. bark properties changed follows on approaching city centre: average pH decreased from 5.0 to 3.0 whilst per cent dry weight increased 0.25 % 0.45 ?0. higher both centre rural districts than intervening at periphery city.
