1221-P: Reducing Waste for Patients Dispensed an Insulin Pen Using the "Special Limited Community Permit"

ABSTRACT
Problem: Historically, an institutional class II pharmacy could not legally dispense multi-dose medications from the inpatient supply. Therefore, bulk such as insulin pens were disposed after hospital discharge. This resulted in unnecessary medical waste. Through 2014 amendment of Florida Administrative Rule 64B16-28-810, University Pharmacy obtained a “special limited community permit” to used pens. Starting July 2016, this project aimed utilize permit for patients with diabetes (picture #1). Methods: Pediatric receiving 2016 2019 included analysis. Inpatient usage was tracked. The amount units remaining (total dispensed minus total administered) calculated potential waste per patient. Results: 220 unique 128 different patient encounters. saved 55,920 units, equivalent 186 At average cost $85 pen, is approximately $15,735 savings health care system.
