ABSTRACT
We sought to compare the effects of combined calcium and vitamin D supplementation versus placebo on blood glucose markers inflammation in nondiabetic adults aged > or =65 years.A total 314 Caucasian without diabetes received either 500 mg citrate 700 IU D(3) placebos daily for 3 years a double-blind, randomized, controlled trial designed bone-related outcomes. In post hoc analysis, fasting plasma (FPG), insulin sensitivity (estimated by homeostasis model assessment resistance [HOMA-IR]), C-reactive protein, interleukin-6, were measured at baseline years. The calcium-vitamin 3-year change FPG depended (P = 0.02 interaction). Therefore, we conducted analyses separately participants with normal (NFG) (FPG <5.6 mmol/l, n 222) impaired (IFG) 5.6-6.9 92) baseline. Among IFG baseline, those who took supplements had lower rise compared (0.02 mmol/l [0.4 mg/dl] vs. 0.34 [6.1 mg/dl], respectively, P 0.042) increase HOMA-IR (0.05 0.91, 0.031). NFG subgroup, there was no difference between two treatment arms. There differences protein interleukin-6 arms subgroup. In healthy, older IFG, may attenuate increases glycemia that occur over time. However, our findings should be considered hypothesis generating need confirmed randomized trials specifically outcomes interest.
