ABSTRACT
OBJECTIVE To determine prevalence rates, associated features and risk factors for psychiatric disorders subsequent to the diagnosis of IDDM in youths. RESEARCH DESIGN AND METHODS Using a longitudinal, naturalistic design, 92 youths from 8 13 years old at onset were followed their initial diagnosis. They repeatedly assessed by semistructured interview diagnosed operational criteria. RESULTS By 10th year mean age 20 years, an estimated 47.6% sample developed disorder. Major depressive, conduct, generalized anxiety most prevalent, major depression had significantly higher rate (27.5%) than each other The highest incidence rates during 1st medical condition. Initial maternal psychopathology increased disorder subjects, was specific factor subjects. Earlier subjects also later CONCLUSIONS results converge with findings studies, suggesting elevated morbidity contemporary samples young people IDDM. partly reflects high adolescence adulthood.
