ABSTRACT
The rising burden of dementia is a global concern, and there need to study its causes, natural history outcomes. Secure Anonymised Information Linkage (SAIL) Databank contains anonymised, routinely-collected healthcare data for the population Wales, UK. It has potential be valuable resource research owing size, long follow-up time prospective collection during clinical care.We aimed apply reproducible methods create SAIL e-cohort (SAIL-DeC). We created SAIL-DeC with view maximising utility broad range questions whilst minimising duplication effort researchers.SAIL individual-level, linked primary care, hospital admission, mortality demographic data. Data are currently available until 2018 future updates will extend participant time. included participants who were born between 1st January 1900 1958 whom care available. applied algorithms consisting International Classification Diseases (versions 9 10) Read (version 2) codes identify without all-cause subtypes. also derived variables comorbidities risk factors. From 4.4 million unique in SAIL, 1.2 met cohort inclusion criteria, resulting 18.8 person-years follow-up. Of these, 129,650 (10%) developed dementia, 77,978 (60%) having subtype codes. Alzheimer's disease was most common diagnosis (62%). Among cases, median duration observation 14 years. We have generalisable, national e-cohort, at facilitating epidemiological research.
