ABSTRACT
The incidence of severe vertebral deformity was reported in the specimens Amazon sailfin catfish Pterygoplichthys pardalis (Castelnau, 1855) for first time India. Fish samples were collected on bimonthly basis during June 2019 to December 2020, from wastewater-fed large aquaculture impoundments (locally called ‘bheries’) north-western part East Kolkata Wetlands, Sampling performed using seine nets mesh size 15 mm–30 mm and covering more or less 5,000 sq m area each time. Deformities found 18 pardalis. Two types spinal deformities, scoliosis kyphosis, determined visually reconfirmed by radiography medical X-ray system. total length body weights individual fish (normal deformed) measured length-weight relationships parameters calculated compared. A significant difference observed between b values deformed (b ~1.679) normal (b>2.5) Various environmental genetic factors could contribute development this pardalis, but based available data, it is impossible confidently identify key factor(s). However, as fishes a fisheries system, which receive about 600 million litres industrial municipal discharge city every day, metal other organic contaminants be reason impairment
