ABSTRACT
The feasibility of a randomized clinical trial to implement and compare the effectiveness three components an intervention for women with breast cancer their partners was tested. components, standardized education by videotape (SE), telephone counseling (TC), (SE + TC), were designed complementary approach disease management at each four phases experience: diagnostic, postsurgery, adjuvant therapy, ongoing recovery. A Telephone Counseling Training Manual developed. nonprobability sample 12 patient-partner pairs accrued. Four randomly assigned components. set questionnaires completed patient partner baseline following assessment emotional, physical, social adjustment, perceived support. Attrition minimal return rate all five data-collection points high. Validation SE TC, one objectives, data from preliminary descriptive study (Hoskins, 1990–1994), pretests posttests education, audiotapes phase-specific session, evaluation forms session. positive findings included significant changes pre- postmeasurement in patients' partners' scores phases.
