ABSTRACT
Galectins are a family of ancient animal carbohydrate binding proteins; the name is from their description as beta-galactoside-specific lectins. They have been strongly implicated in inflammation and cancer. Studies association galectins with various aspects kidney disease humans still at an early stage. In line above, aim present report was to analyse immunohistochemical expression galectin-3 (the only chimera galectin currently identified) renal biopsy specimens children idiopathic nephrotic syndrome (INS).Eighteen minimal change (MCD), 30 diffuse mesangial proliferation (DMP) 11 focal segmental glomerulosclerosis (FSGS) treated between 2003 2006 Department Paediatric Cardiology Nephrology, Poznan University Medical Sciences. An indirect protocol using polyclonal rabbit antibody against human employed. In control, MCD DMP who responded steroid therapy anti-galectin-3 reactivity both cortex medulla. It strongest within cortical collecting ducts subjectively less expressed distal tubules. The total number positive medullary segments significantly higher subjects did not respond These patients revealed also nuclei individual glomerular cells (p<0,001).A suggested authority mature glomeruli during proteinuric glomerulopathies may indicate, on one hand, its anti-inflammatory effect, but other can prognosticate further reconstruction leading FSGS. Taken together, extraglomerular immunoreactivity certain individuals could be regarded factor unfavourable prognosis.
